Problems with Taketomijima

Transition of land usage

Diminution of biodiversity arose from the decrease of agricultural land. Decreasing of windbreak forests and forests for traditional building materials, etc.

Increasing numbers of visitors

Risk of scarcity of water and exceeding treatment capacity of waste water and trash.
 
 
 

Increasing development

Overdevelopment, uncontrolled use of lands, soaring land prices, etc.
 
 
 

Alien species encroaching

Decreasing in native species due to alien species such as Ginnemu (a kind of tree).
 
 
 

For resolving the problems above, We use the “Local Natural Assets Law” which was formulated by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan. This law can be invoked by any local community mainly engaged in conservation projects matching the actual situation of each region.

Structure of the Local Natural Asset Law

 The Local Natural Asset Law is a law promoting the conservation and sustainable use of the natural environment in the local natural asset area (Act No. 85 of 2015). The purpose of this project is to promote local voluntary efforts using private funds obtained from entrance fees, for example, and includes making use of these funds for land acquisition for purposes of environment preservertion.

 Taketomi Town has established a council to formulate the regional plan necessary for utilizing this law, and which has discussed the details of the Regional Natural Environment Preservation Project and the Natural Environment Trust Activity Promotion Project. Subsequently, the Taketomi Island Area Natural Assets Regional Plan was formulated in August 2019.

 Based on this regional plan, the Foundation requested the Entrance fee as a government-commissioned project from Taketomi Town, to accomplish Taketomi Island’s environmental preservation project.

Entrance Fee

All visitors are asked to purchase an Entrance Fee ticket (Utsugumi Ticket :300yen) for entering Taketomi Island. Funds so-obtained have been and will continue to be used for Taketomi Island’s environmental preservation project.

Donation

All people who love Taketomi Island can make a donation for our project. Donations will be used for the Natural environment trust project of Taketomi Island, etc.
